Why do we lack sleep?
While there are certain diseases and medical procedures that specifically causes sleep deprivation, being sleepless isn't a natural occurring process. In fact most cases of sleeplessness are all caused by people who simply choose to do certain things that makes them lose sleep. Here are some examples.
Eating at night
When you sleep shortly after eating the brain cannot focus on sleep alone as the body's response to food is to actively digest it. Eating also causes you to have a surge of energy much like how eating breakfast suddenly makes the world easier to cope with but that same surge of energy is harmful when it's bedtime.
Doing rough work before sleep
While exercising can definitely help put the body in a state of "healthy fatigue" it's never a good idea to pump it up just before you call it a day. When you exercise the body naturally releases endorphins aka the "feel good" hormones and also actively provides you energy. This is the body's way of making you feel alert and ready to go anywhere and this is really healthy except when you're about to go to bed.
Busy with phones
There have been studies regarding the effects of blue light and sleep disturbance by reducing melatonin aka the sleep hormone. This is particularly alarming as most people find it entertaining to browse their phones just before they sleep which ends up suppressing the amount of melatonin needed by the body to put it into "sleep mode."
Caffeinated diet
Caffeine is not exactly limited to coffee alone. In fact caffeinated products in the form of candies, chocolate bars, cereals, teas, and even pills. The abundance of caffeinated products, though functionally taken, can be disastrous to our sleep patterns. Caffeine can take as much as 4-8 hours to wear off so make sure you "sober up" on time or end up sleepless.
